The infamous horse of Argentina and the trusted Companion of the Gaucho
The Criollo, the gaucho horse of the pampas. Known for their long-distance endurance, stamina and hardiness, perfect for every element of life here at the estancia.
Our Criollo horses are perfectly adapted to their environment, enabling them to navigate the rocky and often difficult terrain with ease and skill. This paired with their intelligence and sensible nature, as well as pace and stamina, make them the perfect partner for a gaucho working with cattle. These horses are the ideal companion for rounding cattle up over the hills of Argentina, in our case the Sierras Chicas. Companioned with his trusted Criollo the gauchos can check the cattle frequently and move them when necessary. The stamina of the Criollo allows them to climb up and down the hills, carrying any equipment necessary. Despite not being the tallest breed, their strength and power is undeniable and their ability to carry out this work is unmatched.
Alongside being used by the gauchos for cattle work, our Criollos are equally enjoyed by our guests. Their good nature makes them an enjoyable ride for all, and their sure-footedness and easy stride make hours spent in the saddle comfortable and relaxing. Guests have a chance to try out the Criollos cattle herding, exploring their cutting skills when helping the gauchos or simply a more tranquil ride to one of our waterfalls or up to the top of the hills to enjoy the incredible views that surround us on these faithful and happy companions. However, above all else, what makes our Criollos so special is the unique character of every individual. Each has their own personality and traits loved by our guests. Whether it be Osito and his “gaucho nature” and ability to work with the cattle all day long, Campeon and his soft mouth and sweet personality and endearing nature or Guillermo and his utter reliability and caring nature, each one of our criollos has something different to offer and something that you’re bound to fall in love with.
A lovely write up of the Criollos, by one of this years guides, Molly Caddy.... Stay tuned for Molly’s next blog on the Peruvian Paso and their history at Los Potreros
